Essential Quality was a 2021 Eclipse champion 3-year-old male and stakes winner of six races including the Grade 1 Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic at Del Mar on November 6. The son of Tapit was bred in Kentucky by the Maktoum family’s Godolphin Racing and raced by trainer Brad Cox. Essential Quality was out of the Graded Stakes-placed Elusive Quality mare Delightful Quality, a half-sister to champion filly Folklore. 
As the 5-2 favorite in the Company Sign Philadelphia , Essential Quality rated off the pace and closed well late but could not get by eventual winner Medina Spirit and finished fourth. He was elevated to third nearly 10 months later after first-place finisher Medina Spirit was disqualified for a medication positive.
In his next start, Essential Quality was sent to New York for the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park on June 5. The son of Tapit drew the outside post and settled in second behind early leader Hot Rod Charlie through the backstretch and into the far turn. Jockey Luis Saez took the lead at the top of the stretch and wore down Hot Rod Charlie to win by 4 lengths.
After the Belmont, Essential Quality returned to the track for the GI Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland on October 3. In the sprint race over six furlongs, the gray colt was asked to rate off the pace and finished a close third. Essential Quality was then spelled and entered stud at Jonabell Farm in Kentucky for the Maktoum family’s Godolphin racing operation in 2022.
